On May 1, 2008, NBC’s Today Show, reporter Mike Leonard did a segment about Astro’s public debut at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. You can watch the segment on the Today Show site by clicking here. Astro, you may recall, is a Steller sea lion that was rescued from Año Nuevo Island in June 2006. Just days old, his mother was nowhere to be found, so he was brought to the Center where staff and volunteers cared for him. You can read more about Astro’s stay at the Center on our website here.
On Thursday, March 21, The Marine Mammal Center had the pleasure of giving a behind-the-scenes tour of its hospital to San Quentin’s Warden Robert Ayers, his wife and grandchildren, and other selected San Quentin employees. The tour was conducted in conjunction with the arrival of a newly constructed “seals-on-wheels” metal carrier built by San Quentin inmates through a collaborative metal-shop program that benefits the Center. The new carrier makes it easier for the Center’s staff and volunteers to transport large sea lions (some of which can weigh upwards of 6oo pounds) from pen to pen or to load them up for release back to the ocean. Inmates participating in this project created blueprints for this and two other carriers using AutoCAD and they fabricated and assembled the carriers. You can read more about the program here.
